Google Celebrates 'The Sun Queen' Dr. Maria Telkes Birthday
The bright and sunny Google Doodle is dedicated to the ‘Sun Queen’ a.k.a Dr. Maria Telkes, one of the first pioneers of solar energy.
During World War II, she came up with a one-of-a-kind solar distiller. This groundbreaking invention was used by the soldiers in the Pacific war.
The design she provided for habitable solar-heated homes did not work out and she was removed from the Solar Energy Committee.
Maria Telkes was born on December 12, 1900, in Hungary. She studied physical chemistry at the Eotvos Lorand University of Budapest
Received her Ph.D. in 1924 and moved to the USA to become a biophysicist where she worked at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Telkes earned more than 20 patents and worked as a consultant for many energy companies.
